Keeping Your House Clean: It's Easy If You Do it as You Go Along
Keeping your house clean can be a real chore, especially if you work a lot. I have always hated house work and do as little as possible of it. One thing I've figured out though, over the years, is it's easier keeping your house clean if you keep up with the work, rather than waiting until your house is a disaster area. Follow these few quick tips and you too can keep your house clean, without having to spend several hours at one time doing it.
Always Wash the Dishes - One thing I notice at the houses of people who don't have a clean house, is that dishes are always piled in the sink. Now, think about it. If you wash your dishes as you use them, that's only a couple of dishes at a time and that takes two to three minutes. If you keep piling them up without washing them, by the end of the week you have a disgusting, smelly kitchen, and it takes you an hour to do the dishes. You don't miss a couple of minutes, you will miss an hour, so wash your dishes after every meal. It'll go a long way to you feeling like your house is clean.
Clean the Bathroom Every Day - The bathroom is one of the rooms in the house that gets messy and dirty the fastest. Every morning or evening, make sure you run around it with a damp cloth to remove all the surface dirt. Put a quick squirt of cleaning liquid down the toilet and scrub with the toilet brush, and wipe over the toilet seat with a cloth soaked in warm water and a little bleach. This keeps your bathroom sparkling clean, and you'll only have to do a quick scrub once a week. It also makes me feel I'm doing a good job keeping my house clean, even if it is just one room in the house.
Clean Up After Animals - I have four rabbits that live in the house and, boy, do they make a mess. I make sure I sweep up and clean up after them every time they poop somewhere they shouldn't or after they've kicked over their water. That usually means about ten times a day. But, each cleaning takes a minute and, by the end of the day when they go back in their cage, a quick mop across the floor with warm water and some bleach, and they're clean again. If I left it, cleaning the house would be a major chore as I'd be scraping up dried poop (it's like glue, a nightmare to get up) until the cow's came home.
Dust Every Day - Keeping your house clean can be as simple as dusting. I run around with house with a duster and some furniture polish every day. Not only does it smell nice from the lemon-scented furniture polish, it is also healthier as I'm not breathing in dust for days on end. My furniture looks shiny and new too and it takes me ten minutes! Especially important if you have kids, as you don't want their little lungs breathing in all the dust.
Sweep and Mop the Floor Daily - I live in Thailand and Thais are obsessed with cleanliness. Every Thai girl I know sweeps and
mops her apartment floor every day. Now I do the same thing. Keeping your house clean is easier if you sweep and mop. If it's done every morning before you go to work, you come home to a nice clean floor and you're not tracking sticky stuff from one part of the floor to every other hard floor surface in your house. And it takes five minutes.
Mop Up Spills in Your Fridge - I've been to some friends' houses and opened the fridge door to be met with sticky gunk on every shelf and goo dripping from the egg rack. Mop up your fridge spills as they happen. That way, they don't have a chance to dry and thus be impossible to clean up, and your fridge will smell better too.
Do Laundry Every Day - I hand wash all my laundry and dry it outside (most people do in Thailand). Consequently, I do three or four pieces of laundry every morning in the sink before I go to work and it's dry when I get home. I don't have any huge mounds of laundry lying around my house so don't have to waste half my weekend doing it like some of my friends.
Pull Up Hair and Dust From the Sofa - Like I said, I have four rabbits. That means there's usually bunches of hair floating around my house and settling on soft surfaces, like my sofa. I make sure I get some packing tape and use it to clean up the hair on my sofa every day. If I don't, by the end of the week, my blue sofa is almost white from all the stray hair and dust.
Put Things Away in Their Proper Place - I used to find it difficult keeping my house clean, simply because before I could start cleaning, I would have to spend an hour putting stuff away that was laying all over the floor. If you put your DVDs, CDs, books, clothing, shopping etc. away in its proper place after you've used it, or after you've brought it home, it's a two minute job as oppose to an hour or more when it's all had chance to pile up. This is especially important if you have kids. Put away their toys every night, and they'll have a fresh start the following day.
Hire a Maid - Finally, if you hate doing housework but like keeping your house clean, hire a maid. I'm lucky that, in Thailand where I live, many apartments have maids built into the price of the rent or people hire a maid separately as it's so cheap. My maid comes twice a week, and completely cleans my house, so I only have to do keep-up housecleaning on days when she's not here. Hiring a maid might be expensive in some countries, but think of it this way. During the time you have to spend cleaning your house, you could be making more money than you pay a maid doing something else.
Keeping your house clean really isn't that difficult. It's all just a case of keeping up with it every day so, on the weekends, an entire house cleaning will take you about an hour and you can actually spend your weekend doing something fun instead. It's also important if you have kids, because they you can spend your weekends with them, instead of wasting it doing housework.
