Carpets are probably the worst items in your home that need cleaning. Because they are generally wall-to-wall, you do not replace your carpets on a regular basis, due to the costs and inconvenience. TIP 1 - One of the worst mistakes someone can make when cleaning a carpet is to grind a stain into the carpet, and all over the carpet, creating a larger mess than need be. If something spills onto the carpet, whether it be liquid or a dry substance like plant soil, do not rub down on the carpet. If it is dry, sweep it or vacuum the pile. If it is wet, blot the area. When you rub or push down on a spill or stain, you just push the substance all over, making the spot grow huge. You want to keep the substance in one small area and work on that only. And, because different liquids require different cleanup methods, consult a tip guide, first, like the famous Hints from Heloise, so that you use the right cleaner. For most stains, and ones that are fresh, you can use a simple water and dish soap solution. Different types of stains might require different solutions, though.
TIP 2 - To keep your carpets fresh looking, remove long human hairs with a hand brush. A four inch or six inch brush is perfect with a round or oval handle to grip. Pull the brush back and forth, and you will be amazed at how many strands of hairs are pulled off the carpet. In fact, these areas look so dark, that once you remove the hairs, the carpet might not even be dirty at all. Once you determine that the carpet does need cleaning, and you want to wash only the areas that are the dirtiest, use a pail of soapy water and scrub the area with your brush. After the soiled areas have been removed, then empty the bucket and now use clean, clear water to blot up the residue and dirty water. Take a clean, dry towel and continue to blot. You might even use the hair blower to dry the area. Be sure that you do dry it up, as water rots the underlay or underneath of carpets. Plus, carpet stinks, if it is not dry.
TIP 3 - If cleaning large areas of the carpet, or removing furniture in a room to clean the whole carpet, a carpet cleaner is the best option. Often, you can rent steam cleaners from grocery stores and other department stores for daily or weekly rates. They also sell the proper carpet cleaning soaps or fluids to put in the cleaning machines.
Finally, if you have several rooms with carpets that need cleaning, you might order a professional carpet cleaning service, if the job is too big for you to handle alone.
