When my children were small, I was paranoid about the house being clean. Even now, with small grandchildren, I want them to be safe and happy. And, a clean home is something that is important with children. All of my young ones suffer with allergies. Because of breathing problems and episodes of swollen eyes and throats, I prefer to keep things clean to avoid as many nasty situations as I can. Dust is a real problem, so floors should be swept daily, and rugs should be beaten outside on a regular basis. While it used to be considered a personal preference to have a clean home, I think nowadays, it is extremely important to keep your home clean because germs brought in on clothes and footwear multiply so quickly and easily.
If the children wish to play on the floor, I do not want them sitting in dust and dirt. In addition, people should not wear their outside shoes in the house so that they are not tracking in mud, gum and germs. In my mind, the floors in the house and the rugs should be free of outside elements. It is also for this reason, that I very rarely open the windows. The dirt from the road comes in and feels gritty to the touch. We do have central air conditioning, though, so there is no need to open windows anyway.
I am a real stickler for germs. It is hard to keep children away from dirt, and admittedly, it is probably healthier for them to catch some germs. But, I am quite determined to keep the kitchen clean, and not cross contaminate when cooking. I like using biodegradable disposal towels instead of my dish cloth when cleaning knives and cutting boards that have been used to cut meat. I also rinse out my dish cloths in vinegar, and I do not use them too many times without washing.
I really do not mind if the house is messy, or if things are not always picked up. But, I do want to know that it is clean underneath. The bedroom is a good example. The clean laundry might folded in the baskets waiting for me to put in the closet and dresser drawers, but, it is clean nonetheless. There might be magazines all around from reading in bed, but again, the room is clean and free of germs or dirt. Yes, I know that dust mites and such exist, but I am not really referring to those types of things when I consider how clean my home should be.
The bathroom is another area that I cannot stand to be dirty. With the smell of baby diapers and different people using the facilities, I do prefer the toilet to be clean and fresh. Plus, we have little boys who miss, and the floor should be wiped under the toilet. This is one room that I do air out by opening the window on a daily basis. One thing that really bugs me in the bathroom is seeing the faucets all messed up. Old toothpaste, fingerprints, and streaks make the silver finish look nasty. Plus, each time someone turns on the tap to wash their hands, there are germs on the handles. Keeping the taps and sinks clean and wiped down is much healthier and nicer to see.
The last reason a home should be kept clean is for the positive psychological feelings it produces. It really does feel better to wake up in the morning to a clean kitchen, rather than one with dirty pots, and stinky frying pans left all over the counter and stove top. When I go into the bathroom to get ready for the day, I feel better knowing that I am washing in a clean area. I can start my day off fresh without feeling overloaded before I even begin.
