How to Repair a Window Screen
Pets and young children have an uncanny way of tearing small holes into window screens. Fortunately, repairing a window screen is a fairly easy process. To repair a torn or ripped screen you will need just a few tools including a spline roller or putty knife, utility knife, replacement screen, flathead screwdriver, wood blocks, and super glue or clear silicone caulk.
Small Holes
- To repair a small hole in your window screen, start by cutting a rectangular hole around the tear.
- Then, cut a patch from your replacement screening material that is larger than the hole you just cut that needs repaired.
- Remove three or four strands from each edge of the patch and then bend the loose ends at a 90 degree angle.
- Set the patch over the hole and push the loose wire ends through the mesh.
- Place one wooden block behind the screen where the patch is with the loose wires pointing up towards you, and use another block or putty knife to push the wires flat with the main screen.
- Finally, use super glue or clear silicone caulk around the edges of the patch to secure it to the screen.
Large Holes
- For large holes that are held on with a spline it is easier to just replace the whole screen.
- Start by removing the existing spline and screen.
- Carefully measure the frame's outside dimensions and cut the replacement screen to that size. Be careful to keep the frame and the replacement screen square.
- Line up the top and one side of the replacement screen with the edge and using a spline roller push the replacement spline into the groove. You way want to use some masking tape to hold the other edges in place while attaching the first two sides.
- Trim the remaining two sides of the replacement screen to the outside edge of the spline channel.
- Use the spline roller to finish rolling the other two edges of the replacement screen into the grove with the spline tightly holding it in place.
- Firmly secure the corners of the spline with a philips screwdriver.
- If there is any excess screen on all hour sides to complete the repair of your window screen.
