How to Winter Wash Your Windows in Freezing Temperatures
Most of us dislike doing windows anyway, but really hate washing dirty windows in the winter when the Windex is apt to freeze on the window pane. While the ideal time for cleaning windows is during warmer weather with temperatures ranging between 45 to 80F degrees, sometimes we can't get around having to wash a dirty window, especially when the holidays are approaching and the house will be filled with guests.
Winter washing a window is possible in freezing temperatures if a low temperature rated automotive washer fluid is used instead of a window cleaning product. The alcohol in automotive auto washer liquid lowers the freezing temperature and allows a window to be washed without danger of freezing.
One helpful pointer that will help speed up the job of window washing is to wait for a day when the weather is cloudy. An overcast day prevents the cleaning solution from drying on the window before it's had a chance to be wiped off. But, if company is expected soon and you find yourself washing those windows in sunny weather, at least wait until the direct sunlight is off the window before cleaning. Rapid drying is what leads to that ugly streaking and lots of extra work.
Here are two easy ways to wash those windows:
Squeegee cleaning: Since my windows are high, a squeegee and rag work best for window washing. The automotive washer fluid is poured directly into the bucket, the squeegee briefly immersed and the excess liquid shaken off, and then the squeegee is used to scrub the window. To remove the cleaner from the window, the squeegee is flipped to the rubber side and working from right to left, the blade is pulled from top to bottom. Before starting a new row, the rubber blade is wiped on a clean, lint-free rag.
Spray cleaning: For smaller windows, the automotive washer fluid can be transferred to a spray bottle and squirted directly onto the window. To wipe it off, either use crumpled newspaper or a lint free rag.
So what should you do if company is expected at any minute, and there's no time to run to Schuck's or the Auto Zone? Rubbing alcohol will also work, and will leave that window sparkling clean and frost free. Rubbing alcohol is also a great way to prevent the interior of your car's window from clouding over in the winter, a tip that us vintage VW owners find invaluable.
