Tile floors are frequently used in homes because of their durability and resistance to moisture. Kitchens and bathrooms are frequently fitted with tile because of the ease of cleaning that it provides. But care should still be used since strong cleaners can permanently stain the tile and damage it. There are various cleaning solutions available that will safely clean tile and remove stains and dirt.
Water and Dish Detergent
Dish detergent works effectively as a tile cleaner since it is mild enough to avoid staining the tile or the grout. It is also designed to remove grease and dirt, so it can remove difficult stains from grout lines. Mix several drops of dish liquid with water to create a sudsy solution and either mop it on the floor or apply it with a soft sponge. A soft scrub brush is useful for scrubbing the grout lines without damaging the tile.
Oxygen Bleach
Oxygen bleach is a non-toxic cleaner, unlike its more common chlorine counterpart. It comes in a powdered form that can be spread onto the tile and grout that needs to be cleaned. Add water in accordance with the cleaner's instructions to create a cleaning foam that will break up stains and dirt from both the tile and the grout lines. Let the foam sit on the tile for several minutes to make removing stains easier and then thoroughly rinse the tile with regular water and dry it once the stains are fully removed and the tile is clean.
White Vinegar
White vinegar is slightly acidic, which makes it useful as both a cleaner and a disinfectant. The acidity could potentially stain tile so you should mix it with warm water in a half-and-half solution in a spray bottle to prevent tile discoloration. Spray the tile with the solution, let it sit for several minutes and scrub it up with a towel or microfiber cloth. Vinegar is especially useful in bathrooms because of its disinfectant properties and in kitchens because it functions as a natural degreaser. The vinegar scent from the solution will be gone within a few minutes of drying.
Warnings
Don't use stronger chemicals such as chlorine bleach and ammonia when cleaning tile because they are likely to stain either the tile or the grout over time. Chlorine bleach may whiten the tiles in the short term but can lead to yellowing in the tile later on that is difficult to get rid of. Don't use wire or hardened brushes on tiles because porcelain or ceramic tile will scratch easily. A hardened brush or steel wool will leave visible damage on the tile surface.
